Women are actively aiding ᴍᴀɴy global exchanges made possible by aviation, such as international trade, and making a growing contribution to the global aviation industry. In honor of International Women’s Day, Emirates is highlighting one way that women in aviation are improving lives and boosting economies all over the world.
An all-female flight deck crew operating multi-stop cargo flights on a Boeing 777 freighter over four continents is depicted in the airline’s film. Captain Ellen Roz from the United States and First Officer Heidi McDiarmid from Aᴜsᴛʀᴀʟɪᴀ fly nearly 30,000 kilometers in 10 days on five freighter flights from Frankfurt to Mᴇxɪᴄᴏ City, Quito, Aguadilla, Amsterdam, and finally Dubai with more than 300 tonnes of cargo that includes fresh flowers and fruits as well as pharmaceuticals. Together with the other two pilots, Captain Heather Wolf of Cᴀɴᴀᴅᴀ flew the aircraft from Frankfurt to Mᴇxɪᴄᴏ City.
Women in Emirates
More than 40% of the employees of Emirates are female, with the majority of them working as cabin crew. Emirates’ female pilots represent more than 30 nations and range in age from 23 to 62. Over 1,100 Emirati women work for the Emirates Group in operational capacities in the fields of flight operations, engineering, aircraft maintenance & appearance, catering, cargo, and ramp operations. They also hold positions that are customer-facing in airport services, sales, and customer affairs, as well as corporate positions in a range of business support functions.
With its passengers, Emirates is also having a party. Over 120 films directed by women will be shown on Emirates’ award-winning inflight entertainment system, ice, in honor of International Women’s Day. Hollywood blockbusters like Mamma Mia! by Phyllida Lloyd, Charlie’s Angels by Elizabeth Banks, and The ʜᴜʀᴛ Locker by Kathryn Bigelow and ʟᴏsᴛ in Translation by Sofia ᴄᴏᴘpola are among the movies available. Foreign language movies like Wadjda by Haifaa Al-ᴍᴀɴsour and The Sky is Pink by Shonali Bose are also included in the catalog.
