Since its opening in October 2018, Istanbul Airport has replaced Istanbul Ataturk Airport as the city’s main airport. The new airport has handled more than 100 million people in just three years. Istanbul Airport, which has five runways and a single terminal for both local and international travelers, has won numerous awards for its remarkable arcʜɪᴛecture and amenities.

On October 29, 2018, Istanbul Airport became the city’s primary airport, replacing Ataturk Airport. Istanbul Airport is currently regarded as one of Europe’s finest airports. It is spread across a single integrated terminal building with five concourses. By 2027, more runways and terminals are expected to be built at the airport, increasing its capacity to 150–200 million passengers.

Istanbul ‘New’ Airport
When Istanbul Airport originally opened, Turkish Airlines was the only airline there. On October 31st, 2018, Turkish Airlines Flight TK2124 to Ankara was the first flight to take off. On April 6, 2019, all commercial flights from Istanbul Ataturk Airport were moved to the new Istanbul Airport.

Istanbul Airport has seen 104,447,423 travelers since April 6, 2019, as of October 31st, 2021. There have been 737,012 flights overall throughout that time, and with more runways expected, that figure will only rise. The airport can currently accommodate about 90 million people yearly, but if everything is finished, it will be able to accommodate up to 200 million travelers by 2027.

Before Istanbul Airport was created, Istanbul Ataturk Airport operated as the city’s main airport for a considerable amount of time. However, due to space limitations, the current airport’s ability to expand was severely constrained. Turkish authorities felt a new airport was necessary for Istanbul’s growth even after the installation of Sabiha Gokcen Airport, the city’s secondary airport, in 2001 and decided on a location by 2013.

The new location is around 35 kilometers from Ataturk Airport in Istanbul and about the same distance from the city’s center. The new airport’s formal construction started in 2015, and it would be finished in about three and a half years.
