Lufthansa Cargo MD-11 – Lufthansa Cargo to end MD-11

Plane

A Lufthansa Cargo MD-11 made its final landing at Frankfurt Airport on Sunday, October 17, 2021. At 12:03 local time, flight LH8161 from Nᴇᴡ Yᴏʀᴋ (JFK) made an early landing on Runway 07R.

After more than 23 years of commercial service, this marked the end of the three-engine MD-11F aircraft type at Lufthansa Cargo. An American freight airline will now purchase the aircraft with the registration D-ALCC, which is also the final MD-11F registered in Europe.

We are incredibly appreciative of our MD-11F fleet’s more than two decades of devoted service. We are aware that this particular aircraft is quite popular among both aviation aficionados around the world and among our coworkers at Lufthansa. The MD-11F’s superior fuel efficiency over the widebody freighter previously in service was the deciding factor in Lufthansa Cargo’s decision to use it in the late 1990s. For the same reason, we will depend on the twin-engine Boeing 777F in the future “the CEO and Chairᴍᴀɴ of the Executive Board of Lufthansa Cargo, Dorothea von Boxberg, remarked

In June 1998, Lufthansa Cargo received its first two MD-11 freighters (previous registrations D-ALCA and D-ALCB), and the third aircraft (previous registration D-ALCC) was delivered in August of the same year. 19 MD-11s were operated by Lufthansa Cargo in total, including the final MD-11s ever produced (ex-registration D-ALCN, serial number 48806, delivered 25 January 2001) and ever delivered (ex-registration D-ALCM, serial number 48805, delivered 22 February 2001).

The MD-11 freighter measures 61.4 meters in length, 51.7 meters in wingspan, and up to 18 meters in height. With 26 places on the main deck and up to 14 more on the lower deck, it has a cargo capacity of up to 94.7 tons. The three General Electric CF6-80C2D1F jet engines, each with a standard thrust of 273.57 kN, were used to power the freighters used by Lufthansa Cargo. With a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 285,99 metric tons, the aircraft had a 7,242 km range. Since November 2013, Lufthansa Cargo has been gradually replacing the twin-engine MD-11F freighters with the more environmentally friendly, quieter Boeing 777 freighters.
