How is a twist drill made? – Twist drill manufacturing process
Three steps are included in the main production process for twist drills: spiral groove processing, heat treatment, and sharpening. The key distinction is the work that the twist drill portion of the forming process does because the heat treatment and following grinding process are essentially the same. The three procedures of milling, rolling, and grinding are currently the most common ones used to manufacture twist drills.
Twist Drill manufacturing process
Milling ᴍᴇᴛʜod: Using a forming cutter to mill the unhardened twist drill blank into the desired spiral groove shape. The milling ᴍᴇᴛʜod may process twist drills with a wide range of diameters, primarily 2.5 to 70 mm. The high tool cost, extended manufacturing processing times for twist drills, and completion of the final shape prior to heat treatment processing are drawbacks of the milling procedure. Geometry flaws will occur during heat treatment, and almost all of them will be visible in the completed drill bit.
Rolling: The drill bit is formed by rolling it on a heated blank with four fan-shaped plates. In addition, due to the heat treatment, the geometry of the rolling twist drill will change, making it hard to meet the demands of drilling high-quality holes. This process uses plastic deformation of the drill bit maker with less accuracy than milling. The main benefit of this technique is that it uses less of the raw materials needed to make twist drills, which is beneficial for the environment.
Grinding: the most recent ᴍᴇᴛʜod of making a twist drill. High-speed grinding can lessen shape error when the wheel speed approaches 100 m/s, which causes the spiral groove of the twist drill to be ground out of the entire material. The working time for a single component can be significantly reduced by the grinding approach when compared to the milling ᴍᴇᴛʜod while maintaining good quality and stability. Currently, the grinding twist drill manufacturing ᴍᴇᴛʜod can only produce twist drills with a diameter of 15 or less.
