The least experienced pilots may begin their careers “on reserve,” which refers to being available for a call, often for roughly 20 days each month. If a pilot is unable to report for duty or if more flights are needed, they step in. Pilots serving in reserve must be readily available and able to take off at any time.
Typically, a pilot can only have a certificate for one type of aircraft at a time. As a result, flying assignments are specific to a certain type of aircraft; for example, Boeing 777 pilots are only assigned to routes where Boeing 777s are in service.
A day’s job can range from a series of shorter domestic flights to a long-distance international journey. Air Cᴀɴᴀᴅᴀ Pilots Association members sometimes begin their careers as First Officers on domestic flights or as Relief Pilots on lengthy, international flights.
Our member pilots could log up to 118 hours of real flight time in a single month. The actual time spent at the controls during flight is referred to as “stick time.” The number of hours a pilot can really be on duty, however, is far more than the amount of actual flight time.
