The American economy has been in trouble for more than a year, much like the rest of the world. The US GDP fell by 3.5 percent in 2020, the largest decline since 1946, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, which also had a substantial impact on a number of businesses. In addition, the industrial sector’s sᴋɪʟʟs gap is widening as ʙᴀʙʏ boomers retire and fewer young, trained workers enter the workforce. The ᴍᴀɴufacturing sector will need to change, and CNC automation can be a key component of that evolution.
My experience ᴍᴀɴaging a job shop for turning and milling work has changed significantly over time. The average age of the personnel in a typical machine shop is frequently above 50. Younger workers are hard to find since fewer young people are enrolling in technical programs, and ᴍᴀɴy people perceive machine shops as drab, dark places where strenuous physical labor is part of the daily routine. But the truth is very different from that perspective. The job shops of today have evolved into cutting-edge businesses with sophisticated machinery and robotics. And the latter can be Exᴛʀᴇᴍᴇʟʏ important in bridging the widening sᴋɪʟʟs gap.
We installed what we believe to be the most cutting-edge CNC automation solutions in our own job shop in June, and I am overjoyed to see how excited our machinists are about them. They are already aware that a robot won’t take their place. The CNC machines and the robots must both be programmed by machinists in order for them to operate. The distinction is that our operators now have a helper. Our machinists have firsthand knowledge of how simple robot programming is. Within five minutes, a new employment can be established! I owe it to my staff as the owner of a machine business to give them more fulfilling work.
In addition to enhancing the working environment for our current employees, robots also assist us recruit new, youthful employees. We can demonstrate to the young talent that working in a job shop is very different from what they think it is in reality. Working in the ᴍᴀɴufacturing sector is a pleasure. By implementing CNC automation, we can enhance working conditions and make the ᴍᴀɴufacturing sector even more appealing to young people interested in ᴍᴀɴufacturing as a career.
